GP Referral & Regulatory Requirements
Cosmetic Surgery (AHPRA Guidelines)
Under current AHPRA and Medical Board of Australia guidelines for cosmetic surgery:
- Patients seeking cosmetic surgery must first obtain a referral from a GP.
- The GP must conduct an independent assessment and provide a referral confirming suitability for specialist consultation.
- A mandatory cooling-off period applies between the initial consultation and surgery.
- Additional requirements apply for patients under 18 years of age.
These measures are designed to support patient safety, appropriate screening, and informed consent.
If you are unsure whether your planned procedure is classified as cosmetic or medically indicated, please contact our rooms prior to your appointment and our team will be happy to guide you.
Reconstructive or Medically Indicated Surgery
If you are seeking consultation for a medically indicated or reconstructive procedure, a valid referral from your GP or medical specialist is recommended. A referral may be required to access any applicable Medicare rebate.
GP referrals are generally valid for 12 months from the date of issue (or 3 months if issued by another specialist).
Planning and Next Steps
At the conclusion of your consultation, you will be provided with further information regarding recommended treatment options, indicative costs (where appropriate), and the next steps should you wish to proceed.
We encourage patients to take time to consider all information carefully and to discuss their plans with their GP or family before making any decision regarding surgery.
If you have any questions prior to your appointment, our team is happy to assist.
